A Single Scoop With Peter Rosenberg

This Is Hot 97 is an reality-based docu-comedy television series that debuted on VH1 last month. The show chronicles the lives of the on air staffers and employees who work at legendary NYC hip-hop station Hot 97. Occasionally, I’ll include a feature in this column called “A Single Scoop”, where I ask a personality or celebrity a few questions about their projects or whatever else I want to know about them. The first to give me a “single scoop” is Hot 97 radio personality (and now reality TV star), Peter Rosenberg. Check out our quick Q&A below.

pr
THHS: Did you guys really not know you were going to be shooting a reality show until the days the cameras showed up?

PR: No we definitely knew we were gonna be shooting a TV show!!

THHS: How did the cameras affect the dynamic of the station?

PR: They didn’t really affect the dynamic very much. We’re always on anyway.

THHS: What do you hope fans take from the show about you and Hot 97 as a whole?

PR: We just want people to understand that hot 97 is a regular work place. It’s boring, normal, and also crazy like a regular work place. Well it’s like any other work place except famous people are there a lot.

THHS: What would you say changed about doing the morning show after Ebro became an on air personality?

PR: Everything changed. Ebro is a big voice on the show so adding him was a major change.

Catch Peter every morning from 6 am to 10 am on The Hot 97 Morning Show and every Monday night at 10:30 pm on This Is Hot 97 on VH1.

Syleena Johnson Talks New Season Of R&B Divas: Atlanta, Song Drama With Porsha Williams, And Nicci Gilbert
SJ
The ladies of R&B Divas: Atlanta are gearing up for a new season of the TV One reality series! Along with two new divas (702 singer Kameelah Williams and former Destiny’s Child member LaTavia Roberson), fans can expect to see more cohesiveness among the cast and more resolution to the drama this time around. The new tone of the show is a far cry from previous seasons when the fighting between the ladies seemed to be never-ending, and typically involved former cast member Nicci Gilbert, who also serves as one of the show’s executive producers.

I recently caught up with Syleena Johnson to get the ‘scoop’ on the new season of the show, the Porsha Williams song drama, if she would be willing to hash out her issues with Nicci, and her work with R. Kelly. Check out highlights from our chat below.

ON WHAT FANS CAN EXPECT ON SEASON 3 OF R&B DIVAS:

“Very different from season 1 and season 2. A lot more unity – we get things done. It’s arguing, but it’s not ridiculous. We have our moments, but we resolve things, so you should expect resolution. Let’s put it his way, we don’t have any drama right now. Like, we can call each other today, and we’ll talk to each other. So that’s cool, ’cause we didn’t have that the last season.”

“I’m really proud of this season because I didn’t have to spend most of my season cursing at somebody. You get to see who I am for real. Not that I wasn’t me in season 1 and 2, but you get to really see who Syleena is as a friend and just in a different light – who I am about 80, 95% of the time of my life.”

ON IF SHE THINKS THE SHOW WILL EXPERIENCE A DIP IN RATINGS BECA– USE IT’S NOT AS MUCH DRAMA AS LAST SEASON:

“I didn’t say it was less drama – it’s just going to be less unnecessary foolishness. But anytime you put 5 or 6 black women together, you’re never going to be able to avoid drama. You just can’t, it’s impossible. Anytime you put 5 people together, it’s going to be something.”

ON WHAT THE TWO NEW CAST MEMBERS (KAMEELAH WILLIAMS AND LATAVIA ROBERSON) BRING TO THE SHOW:
sj33
“I don’t really know anything about their personal stories, obviously I really don’t know anything about anybody’s personal stories besides Keke and Monifah because I was involved in their personal stories. The other ladies, I was not. A little bit of Angie’s though, a little bit. But as far as our group scenes, which was the only real time that I ever was with some of them was in a group setting, I like them. They’re very nice, I can relate to them; we’ve all gone through some of the same things, and I don’t know, I just think they were a good element. They’re younger, they add youth to the show.”sj3

ON IF SHE THINKS REALITY TV HAS HELPED OR HURT HER CAREER:

“For me personally, with the way it’s been going, it has helped my career. For me, but I can see where it could’ve hurt it. It definitely could’ve hurt it.”

ON IF HER RELATIONSHIP WITH HER MOTHER HAS GOTTEN BETTER SINCE LAST SEASON:

“It’s gotten better. She still doesn’t drink, she still smokes one hundred thousand cigarettes, but she doesn’t drink, so that’s half the battle. And I think she’s getting better accustomed to Atlanta, so it’s much better.”

ON HER MUSIC CAREER:

“I am working on Chapter 6, so I’m almost done with that…um, well I’m pretty much done. It’s hard for me to talk about Chapter 6 because Chapter 6 is my storyline, so if I tell you, then I give it away. But basically, I am working on Chapter 6, and the entire season, well not the entire season, but the main thing of my story is trying to get music for Chapter 6, trying to basically finish my album, find a deal, find a situation for Chapter 6, get Chapter 6 out. ‘Cause I’ve been recording Chapter 6 for almost 2 years, so I’m just really tired of Chapter 6. Tired of hearing about it, tired of recording for it, but it’s almost done. I recorded 20 songs, and they’re all amazing, so it’s going to be real hard for me to narrow it down.”

ON HER REACTION WHEN SHE HEARD SHE AND PORSHA WILLIAMS HAD RECORDED THE SAME SONG:
SJ2

“I never heard it; I didn’t know, someone called and told me. I do watch the show [Real Housewives of Atlanta], but ironically, I hadn’t seen it that day, so that’s was crazy. I was taken aback, but I was madder at the producer [Pierre Medor]. I felt like uh oh, here we go again with people trying to sell songs to two people and get their money, that’s what I thought. But, that wasn’t the case. It turns out she had the song first, she actually recorded the song, or attempted to record the song first, and they decided that they didn’t want it, that’s what Pierre was told – this is what I was told because I clearly wanted an explanation. Porsha’s camp had emailed saying that they didn’t want the song, they weren’t going to use the song, and they were going to try to get Bravo to take it off of the show, which is hard to do. They did say that they didn’t want to use it, they didn’t have any intentions of using it. So basically she said she wrote the song, which is not true, which is probably why they allowed it. Now he did sign an agreement that said; he signed a waiver saying that it was okay for them to use his likeness, but anytime you use a record on television, you have to get a sync license, which is an all together different agreement, which gives you permission to use the record. According to Pierre, they never signed a sync license. So that was the whole thing – they used the song without permission, and she was on there saying it was going to the next single, which was a surprise to them because they never knew, so I don’t know.”

ON IF SHE FEELS THAT THE SONG WAS STOLEN FROM HER:

“To me, I don’t feel like the record was stolen from me because she did it first. So I don’t have anything against Porsha in real life, and I’m not throwing no shade, but had we been talking about an actual recording artist who had been doing this for a really long time and had come into this kind of circumstance, I would feel some type of way. I would feel like wow, this was messed up. But because she doesn’t even have an album together, this is really not a big deal for her. She can really go move on, so I really don’t feel like she’s vested in the record. She only recorded like a minute of the song, so I don’t think she’s going to lose any sleep at the end of the day; it’s really not that serious. But I think the beef for them – I think the beef is between Pierre and her – not just Pierre, Pierre’s management and her management because of the misunderstanding.”

ON IF SHE WOULD BE WILLING TO TALK OUT HER ISSUES WITH NICCI GILBERT:
Nicci-Gilbert-Syleena-Johnson-Cover
“No, do you want me to be honest, or you want me to say what’s politically correct? No, she’s done – stick a fork in that one. It’s not because I hate her – I don’t hate her. You have to understand, it’s like this, at 37 years old, I know exactly who I want to affiliate myself with. When you start to get to your 30s, coming into your 40s, you start to really understand who you are, so I don’t need certain people in my life. I just don’t need it. I have friends, I have family, I’m surrounded by people that love me that I’ve known over 15, 20 years, so it doesn’t benefit me either way to rekindle a relationship with a person who has already shown me who they are. When people show you who they are, you have to believe them. First time, shame on her, second time, it’ll be shame on me. It’s no ill will, it’s just that, you know how you have that one person in your life that you just don’t fool with no more. They cool, but you just don’t fool with them because you know who they are and what they are about? You just don’t fool with them; there’s no sitting down and having a sit down. Because quiet as it’s kept, I tried that several times during the season, so that doesn’t work. You follow what I’m saying? When you realize that that doesn’t work with a person. .the definition of insanity is to keep doing the same things over and over again. So, it’s not that I don’t like her, I wish her well, I wish her the best; I hope she prospers in everything that she does, just not by me. Just nowhere near me. And I take that back, just not in the infrastructure of Syleena Johnson, you know what I’m saying? If we’re both in the music industry, I hope she finds success in the music industry. If we’re in the television industry, I hope she finds success in the television industry, you know what I’m saying? Just not together. It’s something about her spirit that my spirit does not connect with, and I’m not going to force it, because I just really don’t want to.”

ON IF SHE WOULD BE WILLING TO WORK WITH R. KELLY AGAIN:

“I’ll just say yes I would. Again, I can’t go into the details of what’s going on, but I can say that we are working together again.”

Scandal In Atlanta: The Mimi Faust Sex Tape
miminikko
For over a week now, Mimi Faust’s sex tape with her boo and Love & Hip-Hop: Atlanta co-star Nikko Smith has dominated the internet. Even people who had never heard of Mimi and Nikko before last week were talking about the couple and their freaky shower rod antics. Although the majority view Mimi’s actions as extremely salacious and unbecoming of a woman with a young daughter, the producers of LHHA are going to ride the scandal into ratings gold for the third season of the show, and back when the sex tape was just a rumor, I knew that was their plan.

Last October when rumors about a Mimi/Nikko sex tape first started circulating, I reached out to Mimi’s team for comment. Initially, I was told in an email by Mimi ‘s publicist that she would “be releasing a statement regarding this rumor and at this time she isn’t doing any interviews until after she has released the statement sometime next week.” Later that same day, I received a follow up email from Mimi’s publicist, saying “We just received an update about the rumor about our client Mimi Faust, that she will not be making any statements at this time.” At that point, I knew the producers of LHHA had probably powwowed with Mimi and her team about the best way to handle the brewing sex tape scandal, and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that it was decided that the tape wouldn’t be “leaked” until around the time season 3 of the show premieres.

Clearly, the plan worked, as the upcoming season of LHHA is the most buzzed about season in the entire history of the franchise, and Mimi and Nikko have gained a couple of more zeros in their bank account, and a whole lot of notoriety. Somewhere down the road, Mimi will have to sit down and explain this fiasco to her daughter, and when that day comes, I wonder if the money and notoriety will have all been worth it.

Love & Hip-Hop: Atlanta premieres May 5 at 8 pm on VH1.
