Chantel Christie On Draya Michele, Orlando Scandrick Drama: “It Should’ve Never Got To This Point”
Chantel Christie isn’t new to the spotlight; she’s been grinding in this industry as a recording artist, philanthropist, and published author since she was a teen. Currently, the 20-year-old can be seen alongside her mom, Jackie Christie, on VH1’s Basketball Wives: LA, where she’s in the middle of some major drama involving Jackie’s costar, Draya Michele, and her NFL baller boyfriend, Orlando Scandrick. I recently caught up with Chantel to discuss how that situation got out of control, her cosmetics line, and the parenting styles of her mom and dad, retired NBA player Doug Christie. Check out highlights from our chat below.
ON WHY SHE THINKS DRAYA DIDN’T BELIEVE HER:
“I don’t know. I mean, when you’ve been trying to get something for so long, and you finally get it, you’re not willing to easily give it up. And honestly, it’s not for me to judge or pick apart. Every woman is different, and if that’s what she’s willing to put up with, or not put up with or whatever, that’s all her. It was no foul, no harm over here on my side. You know, it turned into something ugly, and it is what it is.”
ON THE TIMELINE OF HER AND ORLANDO’S INVOLVEMENT:
“I met Orlando through a mutual friend. He text me one night while I was at the studio, and that was in June . And I didn’t find out that they were together until the ESPYS [July 2013], so the viewers can do the math. But all these stories about breaks, and oh we weren’t together, and well we were together, but I just wasn’t living in the house, all these things – it’s too much. But what I will say is that I laugh at people calling me a side chick and a home wrecker because I was never aware of her. First off, it’s not in my character; it’s too many fish in the sea. Second of all, I mean, for crying out loud, she’s on a show with my mom. It’s too many other people out there for me to just go for somebody like that; it’s just not…the people that were involved and that introduced me to him, and he text me first, they know what’s up. I don’t really worry about the outsiders that say things like, ‘oh, you were with him when he was with her, and you’re proud of being the side chick.’ Who in their right mind is proud of being the side chick? Like, what?”
ON IF SHE AND ORLANDO WERE STILL TALKING WHEN SHE FOUND OUT ABOUT DRAYA:
“We weren’t, no. We were no longer talking. It was very brief between Orlando and I, and as I stated in the first episode that came out about this whole entire saga, I addressed it as being something minor. Granted, everybody goes, ‘if it was minor, why did you bring it up?’ At the end of the day, why do you guys watch reality TV for? This is entertainment; everybody just calm down and relax. At the end of the day, this is what it was, and it should have never got to this point. It blew up into something way bigger than what it should’ve been, but when you come for me, and I’m called names, and I’m this, and I’m a ho, I gotta send for you. So yes, it’s going to turn into something ugly, but this could’ve easily been prevented.”
ON IF SHE REGRETS TELLING HER MOM ABOUT ORLANDO:
“I live, and I learn; that’s all I can say. I don’t not regret it, I don’t really regret it – you know it is what it is, and everybody has to kind of deal with life as it comes. You can never be too certain of what’s going to happen and what’s going to come from every situation, so, like I said, I never knew it would’ve got to this point. So I can’t necessary say that I regret it because I wasn’t preparing myself to be this, like, oh yeah, I want to tell her in a malicious way; oh it’s going to be a big deal. That was never my intention, so once it got to this point, it was just like, damn, what is going on?”
ON WHY SHE AND ORLANDO STOPPED TALKING:
“It just wasn’t something that either of us were interested in. It was very brief, and he was in his situation, and I was all about my business. It wasn’t anything that ended ugly – it wasn’t anything to end. It was not a big deal. People made it seem like I said we were in a relationship, we were together, we were happy, I was having his baby, and then she came along. Like hell no, it was nothing.”
ON THE ACCUSATION THAT SHE GOT “PASSED OFF” TO ORLANDO’S FRIEND:
“First off, I just want to say that the definition of ‘smash and pass’ is that you had sex with me, and then you pass me off to your friend. Orlando and I both stated that we never had sex, so where this smash and pass came from, I have no idea. And honestly, this allegation, this rumor, it doesn’t even warrant any energy from me, and all that was was an attempt at deflecting the topic at hand, which was him texting me and attempting to step out on her. I mean, this ‘smash the homie’, real people see it for exactly what it was, which was a distraction. It is what it is.”
ON ALLEGATIONS ABOUT HER AND ORLANDO’S FREND:
“There was a story that was posted yesterday, and they put screenshots of me and quote, unquote ‘the friend’, and him [Orlando] and his friend next to each other, and it turned into something way bigger than it should’ve been. You guys got that picture off of my Instagram. If I had something to hide, I would’ve took the sh*t down. Like, come on now…they gotta dig deeper- they gotta do better. It’s laughable to me; I laugh at all of these allegations. It’s hilarious.”
“No, I did not date his friend. I did not date Orlando’s friend.”
ON THE PICTURES SENT TO BALLER ALERT:
“I mean honestly, this is the thing. This is the difference between me and most of these reality stars out here. I’m not one to back down; so if you come for me, you have to understand that I’m going to come back. I’m not scared; I’ll never be backed into a corner, and it just is what it is. So don’t post some false story, and you don’t even know what you’re talking about. First and foremost, you got the picture from my page. And I’m not coming at Baller Alert because they clearly say disclaimer, this is baler mail; we don’t know it this is true or not, etc. So that’s why I posted my screenshot, and I said what I said, and I @’d Baller Alert, and I said listen, if you’re going to post something, just make sure that it’s total and complete. And you want to come with these rumors and all these allegations, and all these things; just be certain of what you’re speaking about. So whoever sent them that, the story is bogus; I won’t say who or who it wasn’t, but it’s very corny, and this is turning into something way uglier than it should be, but long as everyone else’s gloves are off, you can guarantee mine are going to be off.”
ON IF SHE WAS SURPRISED HER MOM STILL WANTED TO INVITE DRAYA TO FRANCE (AND IF SHE STILL FEELS HER MOM DIDN’T HAVE HER BACK ENOUGH):
“Yeah, I was surprised at the time, but the good thing about me and my mom’s relationship is we go through things, and we may say things that we may regret, but in most cases. you find your way back to each other, and that’s a normal mother-daughter relationship. So the only difference between me and my mom and other mother-daughter relationships is we’re living out our relationship in front of millions, so it’s on a platform to be picked apart and people to have their own opinions and judge it. I think people will be surprised how similar we really are to the other mother-daughter relationships out there. Okay, it’s a little turned up for TV, but I still love her; that’s still my mom.”
ON HER CAREER AS A RECORDING ARTIST:
“My main focus right now is Chantel Nicole Cosmetics, but I’m working with a few producers and recording some fresh material, so I’m kind of easing back into it, and kind of just seeing where I want to go with that.”
ON HER MAKEUP LINE, CHANTEL NICOLE COSMETICS:
“That’s Crush [the lipstick she was wearing during her confrontation with Draya and Orlando] by Chantel Nicole Cosmetics. It’s not currently available, but I do have eight other shades of lip paint up on the website for preorder. I plan on expanding the line and just moving on to bigger and better things, and I’m excited about it. I’m getting a good response, so I can’t wait to get everyone their orders and see what public opinion is.”
ON HER MOM AND DAD’S DIFFERING PARENTING STYLES:
“I think that they’re such polar opposites, that it was just…not that there weren’t any similarities, but mom was just very protective, and my dad was more so just…he’s very similar to me as far as me being a Gemini that he’s kind of just go with the flow, and very chill and relaxed. So it was nice having that balance, and I think that our relationship just continues to grow and prosper the more that I get older and see that, okay, some of the things you said, they do make sense and does apply to my life now. You know, you grow up, and you start to, not regret, but look back on all the things that they tried to teach you that you shunned away or whatever, and you’re like, damn, you were right.”
Basketball Wives: LA won’t be the last time you see Chantel on TV. “I think that when people aren’t busy judging me, they’ll see that I’m very similar to the girl next door, and I’m very relatable,” she told me. In the meantime, the rising businesswoman is busy building an empire with Chantel Nicole Cosmetics. She also dedicates her time to philanthropy through her nonprofit, The Chani Girl Foundation. Recently, The Chani Girl Foundation announced their plans to give two lucky girls in the Los Angeles area the A-list treatment by providing them with wardrobe and pampering for the prom.
